Apprendice mentality

When someone asks me which path to follow on technology, I use to give back the following question: what do you like to do? The reason for this is that one of my main motivations to came back to study it was simply because I like it! Besides that, technology is not only about computers. Fast research, and, if necessary, those studious on this matter can correct me, but technology comes from to greeks words - tekhne and logos - that mean a pool of techniques, methods and processes, used to produce goods and services.

Can you get how this is wide? If we talk about computers, choosing an specific area could have as choices programming languages, computer networks, cloud, data analytics, games, debugging, OS and services management, and so many others. But why does it matter for cybersecurity? The simple answer is that it is related to all those areas.

On programming languages, it will be related to code clean and flawless, or even learn how to exploit code flaws. On computer networks, it will be related to a well designed topology, with the right devices to protect physical and logical perimeters. On operational systems and servers, I just could remember a sentence that I read so many years ago: "Even an OpenBSD server, misconfigured, will be open to attacks" (for those who never heard of it, OpenBSD is a UNIX-like OS, a xBSD variant, focused on security, and with just two remote roles, considering the default instalation, since 1996.)

So you heard of high salaries, got interested on Cybersecurity, and thought that you would just get a simple course and be all ready? I don't want to discourage you, but it will be a constant study. In case of your objective be to highlight, you will need to obtain knowledge in several areas. Of course that, for example, you will not need to became an expert as a developer, but knowing some script languages, like Python or Bash, and programming logic, will be desired, and sometimes imperative. And considering that changes are more and more frequently and fast, you have to get an inittial knowledge and a daily update.

Can you already understand why the need for a apprendice mentality? This is nothing related to be a noobie forever, but to understand that it will always be necessary to seek for knowledge, learning new things and to improve the already gotten knowledge. What is the good news? Today, the content availability is awesome, be it freely or paid.

I will give a practical example. I just improve this webpage to be more responsive. Now it is possible to open it on a smartphone and it not messy anymore. Is it perfect? I don´t think so, but it improved a lot. And where did I find the info? YouTube videos, forums and sites containing tutorials, be it whole courses or just small guidelines. I you want to go deep, you will find info. If you want just to solve a small and urgent problem, you will find info.

Remember that every master was an apprendice some day, and he probably only became a master, after understanding that he did not yet knew enough. Use this knowledge as a fuel to understand that the challenge will be big, but also will be the rewards. Knowing that you study something that you didn´t know and make something work it so gratifying. Focus on high salaries, but understand that a journey inside the knowledge is fascinating! I hope I managed to infect you with my love for technology, cybersecurity and knowledge at least a little. Let's learn!
